Despite any plans that we or those in higher authority than us may have intended, the UK’s 2020 VE day celebrations were certainly far more muted in style than anyone had in mind. Remembering back to similar major events, such as at least three Queen’s jubilees, COVID-19 certainly stopped any grand public events from taking place. The only link back to these somewhat “restriction-free” festivities seemed to be street parties, which were nevertheless held across the UK, albeit in much more limited and somewhat varied guises.
As a consequence of their local nature and due to the restrictions on people’s movement in this early and strict stage of lockdown, BDP photographers offer a personalised view on some of the VE Day celebrations that took place in Bolton.
